The First International Belly dance Festival “HORUS”

Official Contest Rules

                   Purposes and objectives:

The Festival aims at elevating the oriental arts and promotes better image of Belly Dancing, at encouraging through the ancient art of oriental dance the self-expression of dancers, instructors, choreographers and belly dance teachers to couple technique and precision with enthusiasm and passion, as well as exchange experience, establish and promote artistic contacts, compete and contest. Announcement of contest winners, acquaintance with international belly dance teachers and artists.  

Time and Venue:

DAY 1   17-th October

                (Friday)

·         Master workshops of the well-known Egyptian belly dance and folk dance teachers

Location: Golden Palace Hall (38, Svetlanskaya str., Diagnostic Center building, next to the Central Square, entrance – opposite State Department Store)

DAY 2    18-th October

               (Saturday)

·         Competition (eliminator contest and final)

Location: to be specified later

DAY 3     19-th October

                (Sunday)

 

·         Master workshops of the famous Egyptian belly dance and folk dance teachers

·         Gala-show featuring winners of the Festival and judges

·         After Festival oriental party (Hafla) featuring guests of the Festival

General Information:

The Festival outlines International Contest among beginners, amateurs and professionals, gala-show featuring belly dance Stars from Egypt like Nour, Khaled Mahmoud, Yasser Al-Swery and star from Argentina Saida, and winners of the Contest, as well as workshops of renowned Egyptian belly dance and folk dance teachers.

Organizers of the Festival are International Association of Artists in Egypt (The president - Syrian singer Yasser Al-Swery) in cooperation with the “Artists’ Association” of Vladivostok. Dancers from all parts of Russia as well as from various countries of the world can participate in the contest. Both eliminatory contest and final will be held in one day. On 6-th of April there will be held a fabulous Gala-show and after-festival oriental party (Hafla).

Festival Venue  Vladivostok, Russia.   

Contest Categories and Eligibility Criteria:

Beginners:

- adults (15 YEARS OR OLDER):

Raks Sharqi: solo, group

Folk dance: solo, group

Show Belly dance: solo, duet, group

3 prize winners in each category. Open to all adult belly dancers and teachers (less than 1 year of teaching).

Amateurs:

- adults (18 YEARS OR OLDER):

Raks Sharqi: solo

Folk dance: solo

Show Belly dance: solo, duet

3 prize winners in each category. Open to professional teachers (more than 1 year of teaching) or professional dancers.

Professionals:

- adults (18 YEARS OR OLDER):

Raks Sharqi: solo

Folk dance: solo

Show Belly dance: solo

3 prize winners in each category. Open to prize winners (1-st, 2-nd and 3-d places) of Russian and International Belly dance Contests in the category Adults/Professionals (Russia and CIS countries). Participants from abroad – no restrictions.  

Age of the participant to be confirmed when registering!

Participants will be invited to take part in the gala-show according to the results of the contest.

Styles and nominations:

- Raks Sharqi

Performance of classic Raks Sharqi (classic antre, Oum Kalthoum, Warda, Abd el Halim Hafiz, Abd el Wahab and other classic styles), shaabi, baladi (classics, not folk). Appropriate Arabic music in accordance with the nomination (no pop music allowed). Classic costume favored.

- Show Belly dance

Dance may consist of any dance styles and movements, props such as swords, sabers, chandeliers and circus elements. Any music allowed including Arabic pop music, as well as belly dance fusion (a unique combination of Belly dance technique and elements of other dance forms such, jazz, Latin dance, and Indian dance.   

- Folk dance

Raks Al Assaya(saidi), haligi, haggala. Eskandarani, shamadan. dabke, Ghawazee, Nouba dance etc. One may perform Raks Baladi, but in a folk costume. Appropriate music and folk costume (dress or galabeya with belt) required.

Categories:

- Solo
- Duet
- Group (three or more performers)

Competitors’ evaluation (judgment) system:

There will be the 3D judgment system/

T – Technique

C – Composition and choreography

 I – Image

Technique – accuracy of movements, understanding music, ability of a dancer to express characteristics of chosen dancing technique, quality of the performance, rhythm, synchronize when two dancers or groups perform.

Composition/choreography – choice of dancing elements and the composition of the above, figures, variations; proper usage of stage space, communication of two or more dancers with each other when dancing together, variations and eccentricity of using different combinations? Lines etc.

Image - self-expression, actor skills, expression of the idea in the composition.
